The Georgetown Prep XC Classic, launched in 1971, is the longest-running and most prestigious cross country race in Montgomery County, Maryland. Almost always scheduled on the third Saturday in October, the meet attracts the greatest public and private school talent from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC just prior to championship season.

The meet flourished from the 1970's through the early 2000's. The Georgetown Prep School campus underwent major construction which forced the meet to be canceled in 2005 and 2006. The west side of the campus which once featured grass, trails and trees was largely developed for athletic facilities and parking. The meet restarted in 2007 after a significant transformation of the original Georgetown Prep XC Classic course. For many seasons since the transformation of the Prep course, the Montgomery County Championship Meet conflicted with the Georgetown Prep Classic which reduced meet participation.

The meet was founded by John Haley in 1971 and taken over by Michael Horsey in 1972. The meet was changed from 3 miles to 5000 meters in 1973 and incorporated challenging jumps in the early years which were later removed for insurance purposes. Horsey was the meet director from 1972 until the early 90's. David Asaki and Richard Drozd were meet directors in the 90's and early 2000's. The Georgetown Prep Classic endures under the guidance of Coach Greg Dunston who also started the Woodward Relays at Woodward High School in the 1970's and moved those meets to Georgetown Prep in 2007.
